The Sounds of Change - October 24, 2025

Today’s Readings: AM Psalm 31; PM Psalm 35; Ezra 3:1-131 Cor 16:10-24Matt. 12:22-32

Yesterday and today, I am at Camp McDowell with the clergy of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama for our annual clergy conference. It is a time for us to have continuing education and connect at a slower pace with the active and retired deacons and priests. Last night we also celebrated as three people were ordained to the diaconate and one was ordained to the priesthood. God’s church is widening with joy as we welcome these four people who look ahead to where God is calling them to minister and stretch in new ways. Their lives – and the lives of their families – will be transformed through their work in ordained life. When change happens, there is hopefulness for the future, gratitude for the present, and grieving as we say goodbye to what was.

In today’s reading from Hebrew scripture, we read from the Book of Ezra. Yesterday’s excerpt and today’s include part of the story of Israel’s return from exile. King Cyrus of Persia was stirred up by the Lord. Those who were captive in Babylonia could now return to Jerusalem. King Cyrus returned the vessels that were affixed in the Temple plundered by Nebuchadnezzar’s command. The Israelites worked to stay as faithful to God as possible, offering gifts day and night to the Lord. And step by step, they began the process of rebuilding the Temple. As the foundation was laid, priests clanging cymbals and sang with prayers of praise to God, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel!” There were shouts of joy as progress was made. And there was weeping for the loss of the first Temple. The sound was so loud that it was hard to distinguish the sounds from one another.

Reflecting on last night’s ordination, I honor that blend of celebration and sorrow described in Ezra, all rooted in thanks to God. Change is inevitable – and we keep trying to trust that the Lord is bringing good to us, just as God is good and faithful. For thousands of years, God’s people have ushered in change with sounds of weeping and rejoicing, for change is both hard and hopeful. May we open our eyes to see God’s goodness equipping us for what is next.

With God’s help.

Reflection and Challenge

As the Hebrew people returned from exile and desired healing and hope, they mustered the energy to ask for help in rebuilding the Temple. Think of a time when you were devastated. Who did you reach out to and how did they help? Perhaps there is a time you were alongside someone in their time of devastation. Take a few minutes to reflect on such an experience. Journal about how God equipped you for that experience. What prayers come to your heart as you remember today?
